Major Barbara
“The greatest of our evils and the worst of our crimes is poverty.”
Barbara Undershaft, a young upper-class lady, joins the Salvation Army as a protest against her family background. Her absent father is a millionaire and an armaments manufacturer. The play charts Barbara’s disillusionment, as she finds out that her Salvation Army shelter can only be saved by a financial donation from her father, and her regained hope, when he shows her his weapons factory, a model community and a workers’ paradise.
