Where do the boundaries between art and politics lie? How much does an artist compromise his integrity by working under an evil regime which he despises? Taking Sides by Ronald Harwood deals with the case of the great conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954), who decided to remain in Hitler’s Germany. It is Berlin 1946, and Furtwängler’s case is being examined by an American denazification tribunal.
